Travel Bursaries

As part of its initiative to enhance support for scholars of medieval studies, the Society has established a competition for Travel Bursaries. The purpose of the Bursaries is to support relevant research by scholars at any stage of their career, with the intention being that the grants should assist those who are not in receipt of funding from other sources. Each round of Bursaries is awarded on the basis of a single open competition.

The Bursaries are open to all scholars whose research falls within the interests of the Society, broadly defined; preference may be given in making a decision to those who are members of the Society. Priority is also likely to be given to applications proposing travel for research purposes.

A list of recipients and their reports is available.

The intention is to have two rounds for applications each year, with the deadline being the second Thursday in the months of March and of September. The next deadline, therefore will be 13th September 2012 .

The value of any grant will be between £300 and £1000.

There is no application form. Those wishing to make an application should provide:

Applications should be e-mailed to ssmll@history.ox.ac.uk to arrive by the relevant deadline. Queries about these Bursaries ahead of each deadline are welcomed and can be directed to the Executive Officer at this e-mail address.

Successful applicants will be required to submit a report following the completion of their research trip, with accounts. The Society’s support should be acknowledged prominently in any subsequent publication, and the Society informed of those publications.

Are you not eligible for these Travel Bursaries? If so, the Society may still be able to help direct you to funding. Check our listing of Support for Medieval Studies.
