Essay criteria: Submissions are welcomed on any topic that falls within the range of the Society’s remit in the medieval period (up to c. 1500). The submission must be in the English language, and fall within the word range of 6,500 to 8,000 words, including notes and any appendices, but excluding any (optional) bibliography. The submission must be the candidate’s own work and must not have been previously published or accepted for publication.
It is vital that the candidate’s name or other identifying information must not appear anywhere in the submitted essay itself. The text should be double-spaced, and footnotes, with full referencing, should be used. The essay must be submitted electronically in PDF format using the upload facility below, before the annual deadline of 1st December.
Eligibility: All medievalists are eligible who are a) graduate students or b) have completed a higher degree within the last three years (this period beginning from the date of a successful viva, but excluding any career break). Please complete section 2a) or 2b) as appropriate. Any candidate in doubt of their eligibility should contact us.
